If you make long and delicate spindle turnings such as furniture parts or balusters, this steady rest is for you. The shank of the steady rest fits into a standard tool rest base. We include two shoes and complete instructions for use including how to make your own shoes for special purposes.

DIMENSIONS:

1" diameter (long) shanks fit most 12" lathes. Distance from center line of lathe to bottom of shank: 5 1/2" (14cm). 1" diameter (short) shanks fit Delta and other in-line cam lock types. Distance from center line of lathe to bottom of shank: 4" (10cm).

Here is the sequence of events for turning a long spindle using a steady rest:

Step 1 - Mount the blank between center
Step 2 - Turn a center spot round
Step 3 - Mount the steady rest onto the Lathe and placed in center round spot.
Step 4 - Turn length of stock round.
Step 5 - Finish turning at one end.
Step 6 - Start turning opposite end.
Step 7 - Move steady rest to finished end as needed to continue turning to correct diameter on opposite end.
Step 8 - Continue turning until complete.
Step 9 - Finished part.
